Florida Atlantic University
Through its Institute for Ocean and Systems Engineering, the Florida Atlantic University's Department of Ocean Engineering is developing SeaTech, a new ocean-side campus near the Navy's South Florida Testing Facility. In combination with a new Navy engineering and administrative building, this south campus of the South Florida Ocean Measurement Center will serve as its headquarters and engineering technical center.
FAU's Ocean Engineering brings a strong four-year undergraduate engineering program as well as resident master's and doctoral graduate engineering programs to SFOMC. The senior year of the undergraduate program will be located at SeaTech, thus affording unique opportunities to expose students to the real world of ocean engineering. Much of the department's graduate efforts will be located at the SeaTech campus and will support a variety of ocean-related research programs.
Research drives the Ocean Engineering Department at the graduate level as well as through the opportunities afforded undergraduates. Strong programs are available in marine materials, stored energy systems, hydrodynamics, ocean structures, and underwater acoustic communications. There are also extensive AUV and AUV sensor development programs, including imaging and bathymetric sonar systems, ocean turbulence measurement sensors, and intelligent ship automation.
A number of AUVs and modular AUV systems have been developed and operated that will be used at SFOMC. These flexible vehicles, coupled with the associated modular systems, address fundamental science issues as well as technology development and demonstrations. The department works collaboratively with other ocean technology and science groups about the country and with the British Southampton Oceanographic Center.
