University of
South FloridaThe Department of Marine Science is located on the St. Petersburg campus of the University of South Florida (USF). The Department offers MS and Ph.D. degrees in marine science with specialization in biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography. The Department's faculty, staff, and students conduct a broad range of research activities in all aspects of marine science.
USF operates a number of real-time telemetered physical oceanographic observing systems in both coastal and open ocean waters. As a partner of SFMOC, USF scientists initially will work closely with NSUOC to deploy a three-dimensional mooring array, with acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) and a combination of recording temperature and temperature/salinity sensors on each mooring. Data from the mooring array will be telemetered to shore via a combination of submarine cables and line-of-sight radio. In addition to providing necessary monitoring data of the physical oceanographic environment for the SFTF Range, the array will provide data useful for investigating a variety of scientific questions regarding cross-shelf transport of water properties and interaction of the Gulf Stream with the near-shore environment.
