The South Florida Ocean measurement Center is a partnership of of government and academia.  The Office of Naval Research sponsored the startup partnership.

Welcome to the South Florida Ocean Measurement Center (SFOMC) website.  We are an Ocean Observatory located on the western boundary of the Straights of Florida, the choke point of the Gulf Stream at it's closest approach to land . Check back often as this work is in progress.

At our website you will find scientific inquiries awash with experimental detail and practical consequences, a plethora of observations, theories, charts, drawings, and data tables. We are a source of historical ocean science observations and learned comparisons. You will also find us as a source of real time ocean science data.

"The Gulf Stream, the grandest and most mighty of any terrestrial phenomenon, receives its waters from the Caribbean Sea through the Straits of Yucatan. It is commonly said that a portion doubles Cape San Antonio and enters the Straits of Florida at once, while another part, after making the tour of the Gulf of Mexico, joins the first in its flow to the northward." John Elliott Pillsbury, Lieutenant U.S. Navy ,1891
